The purpose of the health needs assessment is to identify key areas of health care needs in the St. Joseph's Hospital service area, which includes Chippewa County and surrounding communities, and to prioritize those needs. St. Joseph's Hospital is using the information to help identify available resources and to plan future efforts to improve the health status of people living in the Chippewa Valley.
As part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, all hospitals will be required to submit a health needs assessment report to the Internal Revenue Service to show how tax-exempt hospitals provide and report benefit to the community. Providing community benefit is required for hospitals to be tax-exempt charitable organizations under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
The report details what residents view as health needs in the community. Residents identified the top four needs in the St. Joseph's Hospital service area as adequate, appropriate and safe food and nutrition; mental health; AODA (alcohol and other drug abuse); and chronic disease prevention and management.
