The Rehabilitation Services Team at St. Joseph's Hospital is comprised of physical, occupational and speech therapy professionals who tailor services to meet the needs of patients within a wide age range from pediatric to geriatric, and with varying levels of functional involvement and complexity.
Comprehensive Pediatric Rehabilitation— A dedicated pediatric rehabilitation program (SPOTS House) provides speech, physical and occupational therapy services specifically for children with autism, cerebral palsy, down syndrome, articulation disorder and spina bifida, to name a few.
Dysphasia Management— Individuals afflicted with this disorder experience often experience difficulty swallowing. This may have occurred as a result of stroke, brain injury or surgery. Speech therapists focus on retraining the muscles of the mouth and throat to restore as much of the normal swallow function as possible while also helping to ensure a safe diet consistency.
Lymphedema Management— Certified lymphedema therapists address the swelling that occurs from fluids in the arm, leg, neck or face due to surgery, radiation, fractures or family history.
Vestibular Rehabilitation— Individuals experiencing problems with dizziness, unsteadiness and balance issues benefit from non-surgical repositioning techniques. Many patients find relief after a few treatments.
Cardiac Rehabilitation— This medically supervised program helps patients lead fulfilling lives after being diagnosed with heart problems. Inpatient Program: The initial stage of rehabilitation for the hospitalized patient is begun as soon as the patient's condition is stabilized. Gradually increasing steps of exercise are combined with education preparing the patient for discharge. Outpatient Program: Open to any individual with a history of heart disease or patients who have had a heart attack, heart surgery, angina or other diseases that would benefit from exercise. The program also examines lifestyle changes, the healing process and exercise.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation— This program teaches those with chronic lung disease (such as emphysema and pulmonary fibrosis) how to manage their health and activity. Patients are guided through exercise while being monitored by a Respiratory Therapist.
Wound Care— Unique to our service area, the Wound Care Clinic is dedicated to the treatment of non-healing wounds such as diabetic ulcers, burns, pressure ulcers, problem surgical wounds and trauma wounds. The wound care team includes a physician, certified wound care specialists, physical therapists and wound ostomy nurses devoted to each patients individualized treatment plan. The staff sends progress updates to primary care physicians.
